Laparoscopic Trocar Placement with Retroperitoneal Vascular Injury

ID: exh63731
This stock medical exhibit depicts a variety of images used to illustrate a theory as to how the laparoscopic trocar placement in an appendectomy procedure resulted in a retroperitoneal vascular injury. A combination of anterior, sagittal and transverse views of a thin male figure are used to show the laparoscopic instrumentation in this case. The anterior view reveals a suprapubic trocar site, a infraumbilical trocar site and a left lower quadrant insertion site used in this procedure. The sagittal and transverse section images clearly reveal how the suprapubic trocar was inserted throught the layers of the abdominal wall and advanced deep into the retorperitoneal space with the tip pointing straight at the right iliac artery and vein. Finally, one large anterior cut-away view of the male abdomen and pelvis are included to illustrate the subsequent condition. All the various intestines are removed to offer a clear view of the posterior abdominal wall and retroperitoneal vessels. A large hematoma is shown in the right lower quadrant surrounding the iliac vessels.
