This stock medical exhibit depicts an L4-5 and L5-S1 laminectomy and discectomy procedure. The first illustration shows a mid-sagittal view of the lumbar spine and sacrum. It shows a disc herniation of the L4-5 intervertebral disc and a disc bulge of the L5-S1 intervertebral disc. Both conditions are impinging on the cauda equina of the spinal cord. The dura mater and spinous process are also labeled and illustrated. The second illustration shows a posterior view of the lower back of a caucasian figure. In it, an incision is made into the lower back to expose the lumbo-sacral region. The third illustration shows a posterior view of L4, L5 and the sacrum. In it, the laminar bone is removed from the left side with a rongeur after the laminar bone is exposed. The fourth illustration shows a posterior view of L4, L5 and the sacrum. In it, the ligamentum flavum is removed, exposing the neural elements - the dura and cauda equina. The fifth illustration shows a posterior view of L4, L5 and the sacrum. In it, the herniated disc material is removed with a rongeur, decompressing the neural elements.
